The failure state perplex: April, eradicator of sympathy.

This irritating habit the Pattersons have of driving people away extends, of course, to April herself. As I've alluded to beforehand, her problem is that she's been made to hate the only real friend she has because her sullen jealousy of someone she sees as trying to push her into a background role in her own life serves her parents' purposes. We have on the one hand John blathering about how this Becky person has turned her back on friends and fun because he doesn't want to admit that he's sullenly jealous of the musician who beat his time back in high school and Elly irrationally hates musicians because Phil's having an actual work ethic is somehow a bad thing meant to hurt her.

What this means is that since Becky didn't take kindly to April's snotty, self-righteous insistence that she waste her talents whamming away at a tambourine like a moron so a clodhopper in a propellor bun doesn't have to admit that she should take a back seat to someone better despite coming up with the idea because that's how life is supposed to work, April, she was going to use HER star power to crush April and her friends and laugh at her because people are wrong about how April is projecting her own hidden desire to run over people and delight in their misery onto Becky's blank canvas. This becomes important because unless you're a snotty pain in the ass looking at expiration dates, it becomes rather tiresome to have to listen to a boorish little girl rabbit mindlessly on about the war no one but her is fighting. This is why Gerald got heartily sick of April's bad attitude and starting hanging out with a diva who has talent to go along with her tantrum.
