Heisenberg Cake Parenting.

Of course, the problem is that the same Elly who wants her children to think of her as an understanding, compassionate figure whom they can trust to be impartial also wants them to think of her as being a strict, no-nonsense disciplinarian whose rages they have to fear. What we thus have is another example of a spoiled child-woman who wants things both ways and who reacts poorly to being told that she cannot have have her cake and eat it too.

It so happens that she spends her life expecting to have that happen. She expects to be able to curse at will without her children thinking it's okay. She wants to make noises like a gorilla eating a log cabin at the dinner table and have children with table manners. She makes reading into a punishment but she expects her kids to read for pleasure. She makes chore time into a grueling ordeal but she can't admit that's why they hate it. She pitches a fit over nothing and she can't see why that's why Mike thinks throwing tantrums works. Eventually, she'll do everything she can to make April feel unwelcome and she'll end up feeling that being a jerk works because the youngest patches things up because keeping grudges like Mommy does is for suckers and morons like Mommy.
