The unknown knowns of Elizabeth's first year.

As you know, a lot of people see the flashback arc in which Lynn spends about a month telling the world what a great person her mother-in-law was while being a bit of a bitch to her dying mother as sort of a how-to book on how to make sure that an older child detests the new arrival. It seems rather obvious to us that spending all of her free time being fixated on the new baby while ignoring the older, less 'agreeable' child that she can't like much because he has an autonomous personality is going to make Mike's infantile bleating about how he had to be a shit to Liz because she was cuter make a certain amount of sense. Elly, of course, denies it and has edited her memory to make herself more supportive and attentive than she actually was but the plain truth is that she made no note at all of what the effects of yapping nonstop about how lucky she was to have the cute new child were on the old one.

This would be bad enough if she didn't also send the message that being older meant that she had to be harsher with him because he was suddenly this mature creature with responsibilities like watching over baby because what are kids for if they can't be made to work off their debts as soon as possible. It's a damned good thing that she didn't intend to make them enemies. If she had, they mighta tried to kill each other.
