The grating outdoors.

As we know, Lynn spent a lot of time taking pot-shots at her second husband because confronting him directly would have led to the badness for her soul called "having her criticisms turned back on her." Usually, this takes the form of making fitness buff Rod's avatar into a pot-bellied loafer, making him look like a lousy dentist who hates his patients or mocking his love of model railroading by making him into an obsessive sociopath who'd rather commit seppuku than give up on his dream to build an eye-sore train layout.

The reason that I mention this is that Lynn remembers that Rod is entranced by the call of the scary, scary wild so her need to win all the time takes the form of making John into someone so woefully inept at anything to do with the outdoors, not even Possum Lodge would want him around. The master work of this tendency was, of course, the doomed fishing trip but as the years mount, John's contact with the outside world ends up making him look like a bigger idiot than he already is.
