On knowing the future and its discontents.

As you know, we're in the middle stage of the "Georgia steamrolls Phil into buying her dream home" arc in which we remind ourselves that she has an off-kilter idea of what is useful (namely things she can see herself using) and what is not (everything else). We also start a plot thread that doesn't go anywhere about a pitched battle about remodeling the kitchen in which he is all about how they'll have to have kids in order to make payments on her vision of the true, good and beautiful and she's all about the retrograde idea that since the kitchen is the only way a gal like her can express her individuality, cost is a non-issue.

The reason that I mention this is that all the acrimony, seen and unseen does not actually matter in the long run. In the long run, Lynn decides to put Phil in a different city all together because Alan and Joan had become non-factors in her day to day life. Phil became someone that we had to be reminded of and Georgia's identity went away entirely and the house they used to live in got demolished so that a Costco could be put in its place. This tends to drain the sequence of immediacy when you know what's going to end up happening.
