The Boston Original conundrum.

I think that it's pretty safe to say that the template for all of the strips that have Elly either wringing her hands in dismay or making me wish Sean Connery would come along and knock her teeth out for talking shit about pole dancers is the arc in which she loses her mind and starts spouting panicky nonsense about Mike somehow getting into trouble because his choice for a Halloween costume is not to her taste. As I said at the time, her over-the-top babbling about his getting shot down in the street like a dog by the police for being an anarchist because nuclear bombs made him soooooo angry, he'd turned his back on love and kindness really meant "He values his friends' opinion more than he values mine! Why is he so selfish and cruel and heartless? Why does he hate me?"

This is because we are dealing with a woman that turns everything into a referendum on how much people care about her opinion because she's convinced deep down that no one does and no one will. This is why she reacts to the whole mess about Liz wanting to fit in by wearing the same brand as her peers by wishing that the school system would take that choice away from the kids and make them wear uniforms so that at least if Elly's choice isn't honoured, neither is theirs. John isn't nearly so stupid because he doesn't give a shit about what people think.
