The malignant narcissism of minor difference.

To continue on from my previous short essay about how Mike resents it when the people around him claim to be real because that somehow diminishes him, it seems to me that what really irks him about Martha's family is that in a lot of ways, it's pretty much a carbon copy of his own family. We have an oaf father who doesn't listen to his harridan wife, a stupid churlish dolt son and the baby girl of the family who is sat on. This is the first instance of an alarming and almost baffling trend that tends to dominate the strip as the years wind down. Instead of being reassured that the people that they encounter bear a great deal of similarity to themselves, the Pattersons as a general rule wish doom and destruction on them.

This, I should think, is why everyone appears to despise Mira and call her a domineering monster who wants to crush people by enmeshing them in her family politics. They use that meaningless chunk of verbiage to deflect attention away from the fact that Mira does a lot of the same things Elly does and for the same reasons but is better at getting results than Elly is so is therefore an evil, reptilian puppy-eating alien from another planet because Elly lacks self-awareness. It's also why Mike doesn't want to get to know his father-in-law too well. He's not afraid that he has nothing in common with Wilfred. He's afraid he has everything in common with him and is thus less special and worthy.
