Liz: Little Miss Come-to-me.

howtheduck raised a great point in his blog today when he reminded me that Liz doesn't much like the idea of travelling anywhere to meet up with a love interest. Not only did she expect Paul to transfer twice to be close to her, she didn't want to go all the way up to Yellowknife last spring to work things out with Warren. She thinks that if they don't do this, if they don't simply drop everything to be with her when she wants them to, they obviously don't care her. It doesn't occur to her at all that they might think the same thing about her, that since she seems to be to wrapped-up in herself to meet them halfway, she's just jerking them around. Why this failure of the imagination? It seems to me that she has a deep-seated need to not be told where to be. Most of her life, after all, everyone else got to decide where she was supposed to go, what she was supposed to do and she had very little say in the matter. It was almost like she wasn't an individual in charge of her own life but an adjunct of someone else. Now that she's grown up, she will not be told where to go by anyone. They have to go to her because they are not the boss of her. Simple as paper, she loves Anthony because he will not make her travel to meet him. She sees herself as following in the foosteps of her mother and sister-in-law who defied parents who told them where to live. The fact that the place she chose to call her own is a few blocks from both women is of lesser importance to her than the fact that she chose it.
