On real work and how to discourage it.

The irritating thing about the first time that each child is sent to Exile Farm that is not Elly getting her bowels in an uproar about a child having a love interest is that most of the time, we see them have to turn down an actual paying summer job in order to become barely competent farm hands who aren't paid "because family is family."

The problem is, of course, that John has no real idea of what the kids actually get up to of a summer on Exile Farm. He tends to act like the city boy he really is deep down and has a warped idea of what 'honest' labour actually is so tends to assume that Mike would get a better appreciation for hard work sitting on the seat of a tractor than he would waiting tables. This is nuts but you can't tell a stubborn galoot like John anything.
