Up the foob without a paddle.

Of course, the problem with the Pattersons looking down on people is that a lot of the time, they come across as being dumber and more coarse and crass than the people they feel superior to. Let's re-examine the doomed boat trip of last year with the equally doomed camping trip of ten years ago. What happened there is that John lost the map Ted drew up to the luxury cabin he owned and since John would sooner eat a bucket of live scorpions than phone home and ask for help, he'd proceeded to declare an abandoned cabin on the wrong side of the lake his destination. They spent two miserable weeks in a run-down shanty and when they got home, Elly laced into him for going to the wrong place. The problem is that Elly doesn't have an alibi because she never bothered expressing any doubts she might have had because of the 'grace under fire' theme Pattersons use to justify dummying up when they should say something.

When you contrast her with Martha's mother who actively told her idiot husband that he didn't know what he was doing and you start to realize that just maybe, the woman is slightly better at life than Elly is. I'd rather deal with someone telling me what I'm doing to bother her than with someone who just glares and mutters "nothing" when asked what's biting her.
