Meet The Dupe

One of the most irritating things that we had to endure up to the load-up to the Big Sham Wedding was, of course, having to watch the number it did on April's ability to understand right from wrong. It isn't right to force a child that young to keep a secret that awful because if you succeed, you tend to create something of a monster. It was bad enough that April had to deal with the sneaking suspicion that her own mother saw her as this horrible thing to run away from. That itself would have led to her moaning that Becky would steal any boyfriend she might have because experience taught her that everyone who claimed to like her treats her shabbily. Add in the idea that there's a big, mean person who wants to make everyone sad because she's 'selfish' and you are asking for a disaster.

You are getting one, sadly. I should think that April still half-way believes her parents' infantile nonsense about family politics because her own need to explain how empty her own life feels needs an answer that isn't the harridan and yokel parents who aren't worth her time. She needs to be loved by people incapable of it and we're all the worse off for it.
