Meet The Cautionary Example

Now, before I go further with my look at what I expect to happen to Elly, let's remind ourselves of someone John is only friends with because he makes John feel superior and virtuous and also because he drives Elly clean up the wall: Doctor Ted. Ted doesn't take Elly at all seriously, he doesn't seem to be a big fan of the cheerless monogamy that Elly defines as being the model for human behaviour and above all, he doesn't want to have Connie Poirier and her baggage thrust at him by his asshole buddy's ball and chain. What Elly doesn't ever seem to realize that Ted falls nicely in the category "the wretched of the Earth" because every relationship he might have is doomed because there's always a third person that blights his chances of monogamy: a mother who took entirely too long dying.

Since Elly is a stifling, domineering and judgmental dimwit monster mother herself, she doesn't understand the hold the old meat-axe had on the poor slob she derides and is revolted by and how having to "respect" her meant that even a supine cypher like Irene had enough of a personality to clash with the old biddy. He might act as if he's finally matured now that the old doll is in a nice vase on what he still thinks of as her mantelpiece but it's clear as Hell to everyone else that Death is his only release from her apron strings.
