Meet The Abandoned.

Given that Elly has no more real idea of how things work than Lynn herself does, it makes a lot of sense to assume that she has no clue that when things happen that contradict her narrative of being the Essential Woman, it's personal. Police constables who tell her that she can't bomb through traffic half-asleep are storm troopers, banks who tell her to pay bills on time accuse her of being a thief, people who tell her that she can't force a frightened child to do something she doesn't want to do hate her freedom of expression and above all, people who can't do anything about her being let go due to budget costs must not really like her at all.

This, I think, is why she made a point to avoid the library after her part-time non-job was taken away because the library board thought that they could save money replacing her with an
endless succession of high school students. Just as her idiot son assumes that Martha is really waiting for the day when she can laugh cruelly at him for being stupid enough to believe she liked him, the dodo bird thinks that people who take pity on her want to mock her. Also, she doesn't see the point of going anyway because she fears the realization that she isn't really necessary.
