The Harridan, the Beatnik and the Stairway To Nowhere.

One of the things I've noticed over the years is that when they tear down old buildings, they have the odd tendency to leave things that not right next to said buildings behind. This results in passers-by being confronted with stairways that lead to a field of gravel en route to becoming a grassy spot. The other interesting thing that I've noticed is that when they start turning a nowhere into a new somewhere, one of the first things they do is removing things in the way of construction equipment like, say, a staircase that leads nowhere. I know of two such places within a fifteen minute walk of my apartment. While I remember the old places, I'm glad to see that they're doing something with the land because it's good for neighborhood.

The reason that I mention this is that in about a few months or so, we're going to be dealing with Jim and Marian deciding to downsize so that Lynn can kind of reference how her parents moved to Hope, BC before they passed on. While they themselves are fairly sanguine about the move, Phil and Elly are filled with regret and longing because not only will someone else be living where they grew up, the neighbourhood had changed in the twenty years they were absent from it. While I do vaguely sympathize with them, it's hard to understand what they expected. It's not as if the people who live there day to day are going to agree to freeze in time to suit two people who only visit on a super-rare basis.
