Martyrdom and inertia: Why Mike doesn't help.

As we've seen, John did offer to share a little in the housework if only to keep Elly from yelling at him. He honestly thought if he futzed around the house a bit and stooped to do some domestic stuff, that might keep her happy enough to stop all this disquieting talk about getting a job and leaving him without a 'home'. Too bad that he didn't realize that whatever he did, it could never be good enough. Every time he tried, he got yelled at or had heavy objects thrown at him because his martyrdom-addicted wife didn't want his help. What she wanted was to stand there and complain about how bad her life was. As I've said before, she thought his trying to make her life easier was a nasty trick to play. This explains why he soon stopped doing that. I've also mentioned that Mike's brain was programmed with the mental peculiarities of both parents. Therefore, I am forced to restate my belief that Mike came to the conclusion that trying to help around the house was a bad thing in and of itself and must be avoided. Simply put, Deanna's being run ragged because her idol Elly is a self-defeating idiot.
