John Patterson: Underminer.

It should come as no great surprise that John's obsession with control made him actively hate and fear the notion that anyone in his vicinty, including and especially Elly, might set him or herself up as an authority to rival his own. This is one of the reasons he didn't want her to get a job and it's also the reason he engages in his most unlovely form of behavior: not-so-secretly mocking her in front of their children. Every so often, you'd see him tell one of his kids that her concerns were less inspired by genuine worry than a desire to squawk for squawking's sake. The only good thing about his disrespectful behavior is that he too lost face in his children's eyes. Instead of preserving the credibility of both of them, he chose the path of destroying it. After all, if he looks like the idiots they meet on the playground who get catty, they don't have to respect him either. This desire of a weakling to be the sole center of authoirty in his home will no doubt obtain in the Caine household. The difference is the method in which Liz's desire to be respected will be thwarted. Anthony will whine his way into making her look foolish.
