Gratitude: Jim and the Martian.....

The self-aggrandizing ranting of the two most recent strips has reminded me of a problem I have with the Patterson family. As I've said in ther past, they are nopt grateful for what they have or one another. The only expection, of course, is Grandpa Jim. The reason he has the humility and decency that his daughter and her nasty brood lack is, as I,ve stated before, that he endured genuine hardship in his life. The rest of the cast have had no such character-building experiences so they race around full of entitlement, acting all shocked and horrified when they're treated like they were just like everyone else. Expect, of course, for April. She's reminded time and again that she has to show gratitude. The sad fact they view that as punishment for being in the way says a lot of nasty things about these people.
