Hafta, Gotta an' Gonna: Bad Grammar in the Foobiverse.

As cookie77, aprilp_katje and a host of others have pointed out, one of the most infuriating things about the strip is having to trudge through dialogue like this: "We were gonna go an' and grab a coupla 'burgers'. Wanna come with us?" Just as she tries (and fails) to record how Shan...non speaks by fill...ing her sent...ences with el...lips...ses, Lynn deliberately writes out the reduced form of the teenaged characters' dialogue as it sounds to remind us that they aren't mature enough to speak proper English. In her mind, adults do not say "hafta" and "an'"; they carefully enunciate 'have to' and "and". This is, of course, nonsense. It's also been a part of the strip from the beginning. You see, Anglophile Lynn had Elly ignore the fact that yod-raising (the habit of words like "news" and "stupid" as if they were pronounced "nyooz" and "styoopid" like they do in England) was no longer common in Canada. Grade school aged Mike pronounced "stupid" like everyone else around him and Flapandhonk pounced on him, bellowing about speaking sloppy English. To highlight her grievance, Lynn used the eye-dialect word "stoopid" to show us why Mike was "wrong". To put it concisely as I can, Lynn is a lingustic snob.
