John Patterson: Tool of the hysterical

I can't get last Friday's image out of my mind. Watching John pull April away from her homework made me angry, made me lose even more respect for the man. That's because three obvious things happened. First, he only got Elly's side of the argument. Given her inability to deal with frustration, it's clear that she put the worst possible spin on events. This leads directly to the second obvious thing; his refusal to even hear April's take on events because he only needed to hear the one side. Not for him the notion that there are two sides to any argument. To a rigid mind like his own, one person is right and another is wrong and that's all there is to it. Having such a black-and-white world view in this life with its shades of grey is a bad thing. What's worse is that it does the third obvious thing: it keeps him from learning from the past; specifically, all those other times Elly flapped and honked her way into using him to enforce her hysterical whims. To be fair, he has poor memory retention and can't recall the stupid things he does for more than a couple of days. If things run true to form, she'll admit to having stretched the truth to breaking weeks after the fact. By that time, of course, he'll have forgotten what happened so he won't know to apologize. He'll also be ready to used as an ignorant enforcer again.
