Middle-aged Wasteland: The Whining Pattersons

There's a damned good reason that John and Elly don't have the same active social life they did in the early eighties: nobody wants to listen to them sit there griping about living a life ninety-five percent of the world envies. John chose to become a dentist, he was damned good at it and that fact gives him no pleasure. Instead of being evil and crazy like Ted and being satisfied with being competent in his field, he wants worship. Since he doesn't get it, he stands around moaning about his lack of patience. Similarly, we see Elly moan, bleat and whine about a life she entered into of her own free, stupid will. Mike and Liz also spent their childhoods yowling about how nobody really liked them, never realizing their default negativity combined with their poor social skills to repel all but a few people. I should think that in the fullness of time, Meredith and Robin will sit there bitching about how they only have one or two friends.
