All hail Michael and his mighty organ! or More thoughts on the Mike and Liz dynamic.

A thing you cannot help but notice that Michael is allowed to get away with more than Elizabeth is. He not only seems to pretty much have free rein from Mommy to insult and torment his sister, with outside questioners being told something like 'boys will be boys', his every whim and grievance is almost immediately addressed. Elizabeth's worth as a daughter and human being, on the other hand, seems to be predicated on her willingness to shut up and absorb abuse. On the surface, this seems to be a clear-cut case of the old double standard coming into play to mess up the children's development. There may be something a little more sinister going on here, however. My take on this is that Elly, having married a passive-aggressive manipulator with a dentist's drill, sees Elizabeth as her romantic rival instead of her daughter on some deep and twisted level. John's wildly inappropriate behavior would certainly lend fuel to that fire. Her cosseting the sullen ding-dong Mikerobe about the dreadful prospect of the bogey-man while leaving her daughter to suffer untold agonies in silence is therefore a good, healthy thing.
