The myth of the muse and the moron who preaches it.

It seems quite clear that Lynn equates quantity with quality when her artwork is concerned. We've seen a lot of strips that wouldn't be as God-awful as they are if she'd break out of her self-imposed isolation and take time to think about what she's doing. Someohow, she's convinced herself of the fool notion that she has to wall herself off from the outside world and work. Does it matter if she has anything to say? Nope. As long as she keeps plugging away, her "muse" will make the words magically appear. This is why she fails as an artist and why Mike is an example of the Complete Failure as a novelist. Both believe in something that doesn't exist: a muse. If the ideas aren't immediately forhcoming, the best thing either could do is take a break and recharge their creative batteries. Simply plugging away because of a need to not look like a quitter not only guarantees substandard work, it also guarantees that real lfe is missed out on. Like his creator, Mike has set himself to become an absentee parent while still living at home.
