Mike Patterson, local hero.

The Pattersons and their friends betray their small-town, small-minded thinking when they all get together and think of Becky as some sort of superstar. An objective observer who doesn't think that the Sharon River Valley is the hub of all creation would properly identify her as a local talent whose power was limited to a thirty-mile radius. If we were to drive to the Evil City of Burlington to hang out with Evil Mira, we'd find that Becky is just another blonde girl who sings at store openings and weddings. Boosterism, you see, has hypnotized the residents of Milborough into thinking that a D-lister like Rebecca-with-an-H is actually famous. The same thing is happening to Michael. Outside the cozy world of suburban Toronto, he's simply another author whose book is destined to be made by the CBC into a TV movie thus permanently associating Sheilagh Shaugnessy with ads for Tim Hortons, Labbatt's Beer and Viagra. Inside his sphere of influence, of course, he'll strut across the landscape as if he were the equal, if not the better, of genuine talents whose works will last the test of time. What is more, he'll develop an actual following and be consulted on matters of importance. Newcomers to the area will need to learn to pay lip-service to his alleged magnificence.
