The flashbacks: an explanation

As we've seen over the years, Elly was never really able to realize that her children would behave like children. She always seemed to expect them to behave as she would in any given situation and never learned from experience that they would not. It's also well known that she can't shut up about when she's been disappointed. Not only is this why she has to control every aspect of their adult lives, it's also why she rants about every little misdeed years after the fact. The hybrid, as it is currently constituted, is little more than a bill of particulars wherein she rants about all the times she'd been less than satisfied with bad behavior that seemed to come out of nowhere. The only problem, of course, is that anyone with common sense could foresee the things that troubled her. She, however, lacks it. And since bad things are all everyone else's fault, she never accumulated wisdom. This bodes ill for the Patterspawn and Françoise because not only do they get direct exposure to a brainless old failure who can't foresee the blindingly obvious, they get indirect exposure to idiocy because their Patterparent has no foreknowledge either.
