The perils of selective memory......

As you all know, Elly is using her selective memory of the past to justify her present belief that her children owe her total control of their lives. By focusing exclusively on the experiences that there negative by nature or those that she made negative by being stupid, she's convinced herself to forget all the good times. As far as she can see, her life has been a catalog of misery, worry and disappointment. This, of course, isn't the only way that a blinkered vision of the past screws up their lives. Take Farley, for instance. Before his his out-of-character death, he was regarded as a dull-witted hairball and rightly so. After the death caused by their witless neglect, the Pattersons blanked out all the times they shook their heads at his stupidity and turned him into a posthumous super-pet. This disturbing trend, of course, is why Anthony had suddenly become The One for Liz. They didn't really trust or respect him until it became obvious that he would never leave Milboring. When that sunk in, he could do no wrong.
