The hybrid in "Real life"

As we all know, the hybrid was supposed to have a different framing device than currently obtains. We were supposed to see Mike flipping through the photo album and telling the Patterspawn about what happened when has was Meredith's age. Lynn would add a strip or two to supply background she'd always wanted to put in but didn't have time for and we'd have a boring reload to ignore. Unfortunately, she caved into external pressure to lengthen everyone's misery. She also decided she wanted to have another character introduce older material: Elly. The end result is that Elly starts to whine about something and we have a jumble of strips from the past that have little to do with whatever she was complaining about. The end result is that it looks as if Elly is petty, touchy and stupid enough to still actively resent inconveniences from twenty-five years ago. It's no wonder that she doesn't have many friends, is it?
