John Patterson: Failure number two

It occurs to me that John was as ready to be a husband, father and member of the working world is his ultra-inept wife. We've seen that he's a barely competent and unprofessional dentist so it's a miracle that they ever crawled out of poverty. As for his being a piss-poor husband, we've seen that he's an insensitive boor who treats his wife like a recalcitrant child and constantly expects her to accept his thoughtless, reckless behavior. Where he really shines as a total failure is as a father. He's just as likely to be surprised by normal childhood behavior as his wife. He too reacts baffled and angry when a child does something he wouldn't; the only difference is that he's more likely to use physical force to express his displeasure at being confounded by the predictable. He's also more likely not to think about it too much afterward. That's because he fears and hates thinking about why he does what he does; people convinced of their own rightness are like that.
