Pattersnarf to live, not live to pattersnarf

As I've said before, the revolting way the Pattersons eat is primarily a defense mechanism designed to keep them from having to do two things they don't want to do: taste Elly's cooking and talk to each other. Lynn has decided to only run those strips that depict the Pattersons of 1979 as living the oddly compartmentalized lives they do now to justify the current lack of family cohesion. Since we're supposed to believe they were always like this, we're left with the conclusion that Chomp-Chew-Gulp-Swallow is meant to replace any conversation that showed one Patterson cares what another is doing. As for Elly's cooking, it's clear that she thinks flavor is an option; I can readily hear her yapping "Eat to live, not live to eat." Why she does it is different, though. Since she has distinct trouble handling frustration properly, she takes out her aggression on her food.
