Foob: the PSA........

Lynn may not realize it or especially like it if she does but her comic strip is servicing a purpose she doesn't intend. This is less a mildly unfunny comic strip about a family of comic trolls and more a poignant reminder of the necessity for pre-marital counseling. It seems clear that the Artist has no great love for therapy, what with its tendency towards emphasizing personal responsibility, but the lives of the people in the strip would have been improved if they knew going in if they shared things like values and expectations of each other. If, for instance, John and Elly hadn't simply walked into marriage without thinking, he'd be a more active part of his family and Elly wouldn't be a frustrated mess. This would have the added advantage of delaying things five years or so thereby sparing Deanna the indignity of being the grinning lackey of a douche and making Anthony into what John was when he started out in real life: a smug dick who disrespects his wife because he feels trapped in his marriage. Also, there wouldn't be such an age spread between their children so April's being treated like a Martian would be less severe. Instead, they made an impulsive choice based on incomplete knowledge of one another and the need for the bride-to-be to be able to put out without feeling like a tramp. It's this sort of non-thought that made 'comic hijinks' (abusive imagery to you and me) a certainty. And, since they don't know better, they've passed the same defective value down to their kids who will pass it on to theirs and so on and so forth. This means that lives will be blighted generations after they've died and been forgotten.
