Owning the horses: the origin.......

In forworse's essay about the collection "Is this one of 'those' days, Daddy?" there was something that caught my attention. John, you see, had responded to Mike's refusal to do chores with an angry tirade about how he owed his parents for feeding, clothing and housing him. Not for him bravencrazy's thesis of "You breed'em, you feed'em". Not our boy. Even small children are subjected to his no-free-lunch philosophy. He doesn't loan anyone anything without expecting to get it paid back with interest. When he spanked Mike for asking a question that made him feel uncomfortable, Elly disagreed with hitting the boy, not John's basic argument so she too believes that parenthood is a loan, not a gift. As I've said before, the running of old strips will reveal that ugly trends within the strip have been there from the start. John and Elly's belief that they can coast through their retirement because the children will pay back all the money they spent raising them was a bad and selfish idea that was always there.
