Art crimes......

One of the first things that you notice when you look at the older material is that while the art is far more cartoony than it is today, it's also far more alive. We never, for instance, had to deal with characters in silhouette or with their backs turned to us when other characters were speaking. It felt like there was a world going on in the background of which the Patterson family's stories were only a part instead of feeling as if the world rotates around these freaks. They were allowed to know that they weren't the only people whose opinion mattered. They were also allowed to be ordinary people having ordinary problems they could get through with a little hard work and a lot of caring. Nowadays, though, their problems are all-consuming and can only be solved by miracles.
