The race to the botton: how much worse can Elly become?

It seems hard to imagine now but at one point Elly used to be a sympathetic character. Granted, she had her bad qualities but she was the sort of woman you could root for. This hasn't been the case for the longest time. As she got older, her negative qualities of selfishness, entitlement and stubbornness came to push the ability to identify with other people aside. This is why she's more worried that Phil might have been delayed than about her father's failing health; unleashing a bleak travesty of a wedding on an unhappy world is somehow more important than saying goodbye to a father who never indulged her tendency to martyrdom. That's pretty bad but, as howtheduck says, she's capable of far worse. We have eight or nine strips that show us how much worse and should therefore prepare ourselves for it.
