John Patterson, the Impossible Man...

The reprint that I discussed yesterday may have been made strange by Lynn's failed attempt to make it more timeless but it was strange to begin with. As you know, no sane man would actually tell his wife that he was going to hire someone based solely on her appearance nor would he defend himself on the grounds that someone had to. No one is that brazen. What, then, caused Lynn to create two strips that had no chance of happening in real life? The most plausible answer is that Rod tried to tell something she didn't want to hear. That thing is that he was not going to hire Hygienist B simply because she felt Hygienist A was too pretty. Lynn, who we all know is irrationally insecure about her looks, felt intimidated by all these fairly attractive women, so intimidated that she was sure that Rod would be at the very least tempted to step out on her. This means, of course, that the strips we see are how she interpreted his remarks. She wasn't going to take his objections as the truth. Her whole career has been based on her refusal to see things from the viewpoint of others. If she did that, they would win and she would lose.
