The Phantom Husband.....

As you know, Annie Nichols faded from prominence about the same time that she caught her husband cheating on her. Lynn knows what's happening in the character's life but doesn't want to share it with her audience because she's uncomfortable with writing a story that so closely parallels her first failed marriage. There are other supporting characters who live fascinating lives off-camera that she had no time for; she'd rather go with her A-game and show Elly bellow at Edgar or Aypo acting dumb than bore us with genuine drama and appealing characters. This failure of the imagination goes all the way to the Core Four. She said in "Lives behind the Lines" that John lives an interesting life that we just don't see. This is, of course, because we see him from Elly's perspective. In her eyes, John is little more than an obstruction whose sole use is to provide her with money and material goods. The idea that he has hopes, dreams and fears would never occur to her even though they would explain why he does what he does. Then again, she was never overburdened with insight into other minds. Most of the conflict in the strip stems from the Pattersons' inability to anticipate how others see the world. John may have valid reasons for behaving the way he does but Elly just isn't able to see past the ogling and smart remarks.
