Suburban Subverted Martyrdom Syndrome......

As I've mentioned before, Elly loves to do things the way her mother showed her and hates to have to listen to John's unsolicited advice. This, of course, is owing to her being narrow-minded, stubborn and slow on the uptake. Her primary complaint, as I said earlier, has always been that John was trying to turn her into his mother when she wanted to be her mother. This, of course, makes her posturing as a cruelly afflicted martyr an absurdity; the only reason she'd baulk at emulating Carrie Patterson aside from not wanting to John to gain an advantage in the annoying mental game they play is if her mother-in-law was more efficient a housekeeper than Marian Richards. The prospect of getting her house just as tidy faster is anathema to Elly; that would mean that she'd have nothing to complain about. It should be noted that the same mental peculiarity extends to her stated desire to raise her children the exact same way she and Phil were raised. It doesn't matter if there's a better way that would have made everyone's life easier; she wants to do things her way and damn anyone who wants to deflect her from the One True Path. Since she's not that smart or observant, though, she whines about how bad off she is when things don't go as she'd hoped.
