Elly versus privacy

As we all know, Elly was infuriated that Phil and Elly kept their private lives private. She, to paraphrase Walt Kelly, confuses mere busyness of mind with mental activity and prying into the affairs of others with the proper concern for the welfare of her fellow human beings. She can't stand the idea that she can't know what to condemn, who to lecture to, what moral event horizon that only exists in her crabbed, narrow mind had been crossed. She's praying for the chance to tell Connie that she needs to let her run her life for her even though she was the idiot who set them up in the first place. She's also hoping and dreaming for the chance to hector Phil about living a threatening life filled with excitement, fulfillment and other evil things. Sadly, she manages to win eventually; when Phil does the honorable thing and lets Connie down as easily as he can, Elly gets to crow about how Connie should have listened to her and bitch about the horrible, selfish life he leads. This gives her the strength to carry on and make judgments about a whole bunch of other things she lacks the knowledge, awareness, humility and decency to even discuss. Mike and Liz end up screwed up as a result.
