Elly Patterson: Failed Nursemaid......

It seems obvious that we're in for an example of Elly handling illness in the family so it seems appropriate to remind ourselves that she sucks when it comes time to do so. First off, she tends to ignore how the affected people feel. Just as she would later go on to avoid seeing how frustrated Jim was or how overwhelmed and frightened Iris was, she ignored how awful being sick made her kids feel. There's a good reason for that: she's too blasted worried about how the steaming-hot plate of responsibility that got dropped in her lap affects her to care. She races around handing out pointless advice instead of reassuring her children because that's just who she is. There's also a bit of vindictiveness involved; she knows that if she gets sick, her family won't care about how she feels. The kids and John would expect her to do a full day's housework no matter how sick she was so wasting sympathy on them seems foolish.
