Elly Patterson, Failed Nurturer.....

Elly's inability to address the emotional needs of sick people isn't that big a surprise; she never seems to be able to see what the people around her need when they're well either. When Liz was feeling low because Mike would just not stop calling her Lizardbreath and hinting that she was an unwelcome burden in her own home, Elly's silence was deafening. She did nothing to reassure her daughter that Mike's lies had no bearing on her worth; she just stood there hoping Liz's skin would thicken so she wouldn't be forced to make a decision and live with the consequences. She also never seemed to address the fear that motivated Mike's hostility towards Liz. Worse, whenever they did something that might inconvenience her, they couldn't count on reassurance that things would be alright. They could, however, count on a lecture about being responsible and how they'd made her life harder. The end result is that they too have difficulty expressing their feelings. It's as if the strip were a horror story with a human monster dedicated to the inhuman goal of stunting the emotions of those around her.
