Meet the new retcons, same as the old retcons.

Now that the monthly letters of old have been replaced with weekly letters from the distant past, it seems obvious that one tradition has been upheld: one cannot believe that the people seen in the strip do the things that Elly describes them doing. Just as I never believed that Dee did anything after the fire but look shocked and sad, I don't believe that John and Elly took the time to discuss violence with Mike. The same need to keep up the appearance of firmness that doesn't exist that has Deanna say that she let Mike have it when she probably stood there whining about how scared she was animates Elly's desire to be a great mother on paper; the reasoning is that if she says she did X, Y and Z, we have to take her word for it. Since these people have every reason in the world to lie about their accomplishments, we cannot trust a single thing they say.
