The purpose April plays in the strip is to be an ignorant idiot with warped values so she can stand there and be lectured to. The strip is, after all, a forum wherein Lynn can tell us we're all a bunch of sick people with crazy and dangerous new ideas and technology who need to be gently encouraged by a sympathetic character (read, bludgeoned by a dolt) into facing up to our responsiblities and living the life we were meant to (read, adopt her failed ethos to shut her up). The reason that John and Elly seem to reject her as a person, in my opinion, is directly related to the circumstances of her birth, if not her being born in the first place. It occurs to me that these are the sort of people who have their whole lives planned down to a T at twenty years of age and went into the whole third child thing with some resentment mixed into their anxiety. Not only was her very existence an inconvience from the start, her arrival on this planet forced them to confront the 'unnatural horror' of human childbirth. You will, of course, remember the EARLIER part of the boomer wave joined their parents in making the epidural an object of worship. In John and Elly's minds, delivering a baby is SUPPOSED to occur in a nice, clean hospital with Daddy in a waiting room reading the SI swimsuit issue (not rushing around in a snow storm) and Mommy in the maternity ward gooned on doctor drugs, not fully alert. Since their vain, comfort-obsessed minds construe her accidental early arrival as the callous and deliberate act of cheating them out of the only 'natural' childbirth they believe in, they've pretty much givemselves a blank check to treat her like a shit-heel.
