A rare but annoying source of tension in the strip is Elly's sense of age-appropriate clothing for Little Miss Afterthought, April. Now, for her own reasons, April does tend to dress a bit younger than her age. I don't know if she's trying to appease her burnt-out, crabbed-up living fossil of a mother or actually LIKES looking like a younger child, I don't know. Some kids out there in T.V. Land DO go in for the little girl down the lane look. Every so often, however, April actually wants to wearing something that makes her look like an actual sixteen year old. This, of course, sends Elly (and Lynn) into convulsions. Both avatar and creator long ago lost sight of the shades of grey between their dowdy ideal of dressing April like a Russian cleaning woman and modern, trendy stuff which they confuse with the working attire of a junky hooker. Neither will acknowledge that there's something both flattering and practical because THAT would require a mind capable of compromise. I'd have loved to see JIM'S take on this before he got blown off as a seat warmer on the short bus. Everyone's reaction to ELLY'S teenage fashion choices would be absofuckinglutely priceless!!
