John versus divorce.....

The sad thing about Young Elly's nonstop paranoia that John would leave her were that they were unfounded. The simple reason is that the male characters in the strip will only go so far as ogling pretty girls. At the end of the day, they'll surround themselves with beauty, heave a wistful sigh and head home to suburban ennui with the wife and kids. John's too in love with predictability to stray. Besides, his parents and their friends had troubles and divorce wasn't an option so it isn't an option for him. It probably angered ans saddened Elly when she realized and accepted that inertia and not love was keeping their marriage together. This could explain "BAWWWW!!!!", couldn't it? If she started to think that John might have a hidden motive like I do, she'd be even more dejected. I've always had the feeling that John got an ego-boost of being thought of as a big shot by the people back in the small town he couldn't wait to leave. Any domestic strife means he could no longer impress people he despises so he's got a strong motive to keep things under control.
