One of the most frequent complaints about the Pattersons is that, despite being creeps, they are the dullest family in the strip. Only Anthony matches them in being as dull as pasteboard and as charming as a rabid badger. This is, of course, because Lynn needs them to be as bland as possible so that they can be whatever she wants them to be when she needs it. There can't be a conflict between their actions and personalities if they don't have them. This also explains why the Strip of Destiny is an appropriate ending for their adventures. Since nothing happens to them, they might as well just fade into the mist. If Lynn had decided to have real conflict and characterization, it would have been a bad thing to unleash the Mary Sue apocalypse. Since she didn't, it's only annoying. Almost as annoying as the fact that we all could have come up with exciting adventures for the Pattersons to have only to see something as riveting as watching paint dry.
