The snarliness factor reconsidered.

As aprilp_katje pointed out, Elly doesn't go from 'sympathy to snarl' as such; she instead goes from 'snarl to snarl to the nth factor.' She's not good at comforting other people because she's vain and self-absorbed so takes every reverse as a personal slight. She's also not good at not knowing what she's not good at; I can think of two examples where she's taken aback because a family member wouldn't confide in her. The first is the mysterious-seeming illness that put Lizzie in the hospital for a week or so when she was in pre-school. You know and I know that Lizzie picked up on the fact that if she tried telling Elly she was sick, she'd get yelled at for making Mommy's life sooooooooooo hard; Elly, on the other hand, doesn't know that. She was baffled by Lizzie's refusal to open up to her. This was also the case in the second example : her discovery that Liz made her teacher Ms Edwards into her confidant. According to Elly, she should have come to her for advice; this makes no sense because we all know what the end result would be: Elly berating Liz for whatever dubious reasons exist inside Elly's twisted mind.
