Snarky Candiru2

Sincerity and other things not believed in.

Here's an interesting little experiment for you: find an example of Elly taking a compliment at face value. I think you'll find that whenever someone is stupid enough to pay Elly a compliment, she goes out of her way to take it the wrong way. The most annoying example of this trend is, of course:
  1. John called me his little pumpkin.
  2. Pumpkins are round.
  3. He must mean that I am also round.

The recent strip in which she refused to listen to his attempt to defuse her need to whine about being ooooooooold and faaaaaaaaaaaaaaat and uuuuuuuuuugly and instead rattled on all the more about how she was too hideous to live comes a close second.

This, I should think, is the price these people have to pay and pay and pay for thinking like bullies. Since their childhoods seemed to have been misspent keeping people in line and watching out for signs of rebellion and snitchery and since no authority figure ever managed to teach them that not everyone is an aggressive piece of shit, they can't believe that people aren't trying to get them somehow. The end result is a pair of pathetic failures who raised their children to suspect an ulterior motive in a weather forecast.
