Snarky Candiru2

The supporting cast as a rite of passage.

As we all know, this year heralds a biggish change in the strip. That's because the end result of Connie's leaving town because she can't make up her mind whether the shrug of apathy that her 'predicament' would inspire in regular people is more humiliating than the gossip and derision she expects means that the Enjo family move into her old house. While this leaves Mike wondering if palling around with Brian means cheating on Lawrence, it gives Lizzie something she hasn't had before: a best friend in Dawn. The interesting thing about this is that we have something of a neat parallel of what happened back in 1979 and 1980. Back when Mike was four, he didn't have friends as such. That's because he seemed to be part of a roving pack of small children who were put on this Earth to keep mothers from having free time. It was only when he was five that they started to become individual enough to be part of a social circle.

That being said, we can't really expect to have the reprints long enough to see the same thing happen to the monkeymass that surrounds the Martian. Either Lynn will grow tired with them or the Syndicate will quietly drop them once the fan base dies off.
