One of the things that really tends to distinguish the Early from the Middle Years is how Michael and Liz react to the unpleasant yearly reality that is Winter. You see, when Mike and Lizzie were small children, they couldn't get enough of playing in the snow and so on and so forth. However, we're about a few years away from their having much the same attitude towards cold weather as their parents. As we've seen, John and Elly might live in a sub-arctic climate and deal with the phrases "wind chill advisory", "polar vortex", "snow squall" and "freezing rain" but, like most of us, they don't especially like dealing with the season that I've noticed. The part of that which reassures Elly is that this discomfort with the cold is directly proportional to a person's age. What irritates her is that it also seems to be triggered by having to stand around with a snow shovel in one's hand.
