Snarky Candiru2

Elly's idea of fairness.

I should think that by now, it's pretty much established that Elly is, if anything, a personification of the saying "If Momma ain't happy...NOBODY'S happy." The strip's history is littered with the wreckage of potentially happy moments spoiled by the black cloud of unfocused rage over Elly's head and instead of wondering why it became a body part, we're expected to get behind Elly being pissed off because she thinks her life is being lived in vain because she doesn't get that ticker tape parade she feels entitled to.

This means, of course, that she makes 'fairness' into something negative and stupid and mean-spirited because she can't stand the idea of people enjoying life when she refuses to. It's as if she's a case study in brainless envy and lunk-headed self-loathing projecting her free-floating malice and begrudgery onto the world. The form it usually takes with a family member is denying him or her a pleasant experience she can't have so that she doesn't feel left out.
