Mike and Lizzie versus sleep

In the very early years, Mike had an intermittent complaint: it seemed to him that his parents were being mean and cruel to him because they made him go to bed really early in the evening. He wasn't done playing yet but it didn't seem to matter; Elly would march him up to the bath to wash off all the neat dirt that proved he wasn't a sissy, put him in his jammies and made him go to bed while she and John, as far as he knew, got to enjoy themselves at his expense. He didn't want to hear his mother's 'lies' about how he needed more sleep than they did because he wanted to play. He also wanted to avoid another bout of the night terrors; it seems to me that both he and Lizzie had sleep disorders that made it hard for them to want to go to bed. Harder still, they had a dimwit mother who didn't believe in the night terrors and a goof dad who thought that all they needed was an attitude adjustment. Their lives were messed up because their parents were dumber than dirt. I should think the real reason that Mike spends his nights ticki-tacka-tapping away at his awful books is that he doesn't want to wake up screaming. This is also the reason Liz drinks; she's hoping that in her stupor, she won't experience the nightly horror that's plagued her all her life.
