The looniness of the long-distance phone-call.

One of the more interesting things about the Early Years of the strip was that the Pattersons could have really benefited from a good long-distance plan; it was too bad for them that the CTRC (the Canadian equivalent of the FCC), didn't allow competition in that area until after Marian was dead. That way, Elly wouldn't have burned quite as big a hole in the budget whining to Mommy about how mean and cruel John and the kids were every freaking day. Her expectation,as team_kelpfroth pointed out, seems to have been that if she whined long enough and hard enough Mommy would either swoop down from Vancouver and make them behave or take them off her hands or something; she also punctuates this childish demand with pleas for sympathy for how she's aged before her time. It must have been tiresome to be Marian back then; every day, she was jolted out of her repose by her brat kid daughter moaning about nothing and expecting sympathy for piddly-crap.
